Getting Medical Records Translated for the Immigration Application

May 30, 2022 by The Perfect Translation Leave a Comment

As part of the immigration process, applicants must submit Form I-693, “Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record.”   A government-authorized doctor must perform a medical examination on the applicant and complete the document.  USCIS uses this form to screen applicants for health-related conditions that make a candidate inadmissible to the United States.  Those seeking entry to the United States will need to have their medical records translated for the immigration application.

Medical Records Translated for the ImmigrationWhat health conditions make a candidate inadmissible to the United States?

There are four general categories of conditions the USCIS screens for:

  1. Communicable diseases of public health significance.
  2. Lack of proof of having received required vaccinations.
  3. Physical or mental disorders with associated harmful behavior or a history of associated harmful behavior.
  4. Drug abuse or addiction.

Why do you need your medical records translated for the immigration application?

The physician conducting the medical examination will need to have a complete history of the applicant’s health condition.  Some of the most common medical records they will need to review in addition to a physical exam are:

  • Vaccination records
  • Medical history or transcripts
  • Chest x-rays
  • Letters from the applicant’s regular physician that describe treatment plans and health conditions.
  • Government-issued photo identification

Using a professional translation service to provide accurate, legal translations of medical records is critical.  Because the physician relies on the information provided by the applicant to complete Form I-693 correctly, translation errors can delay the process or result in the applicant’s disqualification.  A qualified translator will understand what the physician and the USCIS need for the paperwork and help ensure it is accurately reflected in the translated documents.
